Complete historical descriptions of new and elegant picturesque views of the antiquities of England and Wales: being a grand copper-plate repository of elegance, taste, and entertainment. Containing a new and complete collection of superb views of all the most remarkable ruins and antient buildings, such as abbeys, castles, monasteries, priories, and other religious houses, bridges, cathedrals, churches, chapels, towers, gates, arches, walls, antique houses, mansions, antient hospitals, colleges, palaces, monuments, nunneries, and other miscellaneous curiosities of antiquity, situate in different parts of England and Wales. All accurately drawn on the several spots, by artists of the first eminence, and finely engraved by the most celebrated engravers, whose names will always be affixed to their respective performances. The whole most beautifully printed in folio, on superfine paper, and accompanied by elegant letter-press descriptions of the several places delineated: wherein will be given, a copious and entertaining historical account of the situation, as well as antient and present state, of all those various magnificent remains of antiquity, and authentic memoirs of their several possessors, from their foundation to the present time: together with a clear account of the time when and the persons by whom they were built, and every other memorable event, and interesting circumstance or incident, relative to the important subject of our national antiquities, from the best authorities. And including the most memorable events that have happened at the respective places, and memoirs of the lives of such learned antiquarians as were born or flourished in the neighbourhood. To which will be added, various picturesque views of the principal seats of the nobility and gentry; as also select views, delicately executed, of remarkable antiquities, romantic prospects, and other curiosities in Scotland and Ireland, and the Isles of Wight, Man, Jersey, Guernsey, Anglesea &c. Likewise a complete set of county-maps, accurately executed by the best artists - also accompanied with elegant letter-press descriptions of the ruins, buildings, &c. The whole forming an admirable groupe of elegant and delightful copper-plate prints, far more neat, accurate, extensive, and numerous, as well as cheaper, than any yet extant. Calculated equally to please the polite - entertain the curious - instruct the uninformed - and assist the learned historian. In the course of this ornamental work will also be given, (besides the entertaining letter-press descriptions already mentioned) a general history of antient castles, forts, &c. with an explanation of the engines and other machines used in former times for their attack and defence. Including an illustration of the terms used in English, Saxon, Norman, and Gothic architecture used in this country : also a comprehensive history of Abbeys, and other monastic foundations, and a general description of the different kinds of druidical monuments, &c. Together with an authentic account of Doomsday-book, and a specimen of the hands in which it was written soon after the Norman Conquest. / By Henry Boswell, Esq. F.A.S. Assisted by many antiquarians, and other ingenious gentlemen in different parts of the kingdom.
