- 1 November 1875
- Abstract: This paper provides practical facts relating to the workings of the screw propeller, prefaced by a brief history of the subject. Notes Isherwood's experiments on the efficiency of the screw propeller using gunboats engined by the Maudslay and Penn companies. Discusses different type of screw design including the Magin screw, Griffiths' propeller, the Lowe-Vansittart and others. The author describes the fitting and shafts of propellers using the example of the steamship 'Atrato'. The repair of 'Ethiopia' at sea and the author's own scheme for the repair of broken shafts concludes the paper.
