  • "El friso de la Estructura 1-A Sub de Balamkú, Campeche, es una de las más complejas expresiones artísticas mayas del periodo Clásico (250-900 d.C.) enfocadas en la exaltación de los gobernantes sagrados. Comprender integralmente este monumento no requiere que únicamente sea analizando bajo las lupas de la iconografía y la historia del arte. Se necesita un estudio exhaustivo más amplio que considere el contexto arquitectónico inmediato como un factor de impacto en los juegos de significación del monumento; que analice el entorno construido circundante en su papel de espacio de comunicación o de recepción, y que explore las posibles circunstancias sociales que estuvieron detrás de su construcción y que determinaron sus peculiaridades. Las investigaciones arqueológicas en Balamkú han sido sumamente prolíficas en este sentido y han arrojado cuantiosos datos que permiten un acercamiento integral de este tipo. Este estudio no se limita a diseccionar la imagen del friso y aislarla de su propio entorno. Desde luego, se parte de un análisis detallado de la escena y se identifican los personajes y sus acciones, los lugares y los temas representados, pero también se contextualiza el discurso visual en un momento específico del devenir social y político del sitio; un momento en el que la comunidad afrontó un importante cambio dinástico y el consecuente traslado de la sede del poder local. Es en este marco histórico en el que el monumento cobra total sentido y en el que se comprende el peso y la trascendencia de su mensaje, pero también se vislumbra su capacidad para crear y materializar, junto la arquitectura, un lugar con significado dentro del entorno construido de Balamkú."--
  • "The frieze of Structure 1-A Sub of Balamkú, Campeche, is one of the most complex Maya artistic expressions of the Classic period (250-900 AD), focused on the exaltation of the sacred rulers. For an integral understanding of this monument it is necessary to go beyond approaches from iconography and art history. Instead, a broader and detailed study is needed of the immediate architectural context, which could have had an impact on the meaning of the monument; the surrounding built environment as a space of communication or reception; and the possible social circumstances behind its construction and its peculiarities. Archaeological investigations in Balamku have been highly prolific and have yielded abundant data that allow a comprehensive approach of this type. This study is not limited to dissecting the image of the frieze and isolating it from its environment, although, of course, it is based on a detailed analysis of the scene, its places, and characters. The themes represented are also identified and analyzed, and the visual discourse is contextualized in a specific moment of the social and political evolution of the site, a moment in which the community faced a critical dynastic change with the consequent transfer of the seat of power. n this historical framework, the monument may be better understood, and the significance of its message is drawn out. This integral vision allows us to comprehend its ability to create and materialize a meaningful place within the built environment of Balamku."--
