About the library

The University of Southampton has five library sites:

Hartley Library: holds the main collections for arts, economics, education, engineering, geography, history, humanities, law, mathematics, physical sciences ,biological sciences including biochemistry, environmental sciences, physiology and other pre-clinical medical subjects, nursing and social sciences. Also houses the Special Collections.

The Library & Learning Commons: (located on the upper-second-level of the Avenue campus) It holds the Humanities Course Collection (excluding Music), Language Learning Resources, a significant Film Collection and offers a variety of study areas.

Health Services Library: supports the Faculties of Medicine and Health Sciences. It is based at the Southampton General Hospital, and also provides services for NHS staff.

National Oceanographic Library: A national resource for the UK marine and earth science community. The National Oceanographic Library supports staff and students at the National Oceanographic Centre (NOC), Ocean and Earth Science at the University of Southampton, the University of Southampton as a whole and the Natural Environment Council research libraries. The library is also open by appointment to the public.

Winchester School of Art Library: a specialist art and design library based in Winchester, it covers art and design history, fine art, fashion and textiles, cultural studies, film and photography.

Accessing materials

Can I see live document availability on Library Hub Discover? No.

Can I obtain items via inter-library loan? Yes - subject to the library's local lending policy. See their website for details. You must request an inter-library loan via a library of which you are a member. Talk to your own library staff for advice on ordering an item.

Can I visit the library to view materials? Yes - see the library's website for access details. If you wish to visit it is advisable to contact the library in advance, to ensure that they can accommodate you and that the material you need will be available.
