About the library
The Devon and Exeter Institution is a membership library and educational charity. It was founded in 1813 for the ‘general diffusion of Science, Literature and the Arts’ and for illustrating the history of Exeter and the county of Devon. The heart of the Institution is the Library, a heritage collection in its outstanding original setting. The foundation collection reveals the intellectual, political and cultural interests of the region from the beginning of the 19th century and includes books, including bound newspapers and periodicals, and many thousands of maps, prints, drawings, paintings, pamphlets and other ephemera.
